Collaborations in Artists’ Books from the San Francisco Art Institute

"Just as a painting and sculpture each have their own unique capacity to carry art expression, a book when made by an artist alert to its special characteristics can produce a transforming, insightful and magical result.” -- Charles Hobson

The San Francisco Center for The Book responds to the challenge of defining artists’ books with an exhibition featuring artists' books made by San Francisco Art Institute alumni and faculty.

For over 125 years, the San Francisco Art Institute has proven its reputation of being of the premiere art colleges in the nation. The school has been the center of many of this country’s major art movements, claiming numerous important American artists as faculty alumni. The impact of the school’s educational programs and programming on the graphic and fine arts industry extends into fields as diverse as typography, papermaking, photography, printmaking and even book arts.
