West Coast Book Artists of the 1970s In the 1970s, artists experimenting with book forms created provocative, ingenious and sculptural solutions that challenged the ancient heritage of the codex and the Oriental/Near Eastern legacies. To break through the confines of tradition, artists developed unparalleled works of art in book form, placing greater demands on the "reader/viewer" and inspiring collectors and curators. As Mallarmé said, "Everything exists in the world in order to become a book" and book artists of the seventies used everything, including hair, grass, glass, wood, and old shoes. |
