Convergence: three fine bookbinders
Linda Barrett, curator
May 8 - Jun 1, 2001

Dominic Riley, MFK Fisher Stories: Design Binding

In a stunning display of work from the early codex to the illustrious design binding, three distinguished members of the Hand Bookbinders of California are featured in this small group exhibition. Together the talented trio will display a variety of paper, leather and gold in some truly beautiful book forms.

Conservator Michael Burke shows some early and medieval structures, as well as some classic English fine bindings. Dominic Riley takes off from this theme with some period bindings, bringing us up to date with contemporary design bindings. With her fine French approach, Joanne Sonnichsen shows a number of traditional bindings coupled with works that explore the creative possibilities of early structures used in experimental forms. This brings us back to Michael's models, and the very origin of the codex itself.
