Faux Post

Universe Okotopus, by Shozo Shimamoto, offset printed stamps, 1987

Artists’ postage stamps from the collection of John Held, Jr.

There is a certain mystery inherent in receiving a letter from a far distant land — perhaps it is the unfamiliar return address or the indecipherable post mark. More likely it is the postage stamp that piques our interest. Whether the image is of an exotic flower, an historical event or a long-dead monarch, each is a small, carefully composed and executed work of art. Only recently has the international art world focused upon the mail process as a possible canvas.

This exhibition — drawn from one of the largest collections in the world — features the work of over fifty historical and contemporary  figures from over twenty countries. Subjects range from Elvis to Hiroshima with an awareness of the larger conceptual issues of Mail Art: democratizing of creative expression, collaboration, boundary-free inter-cultural exchange, and the melding of art with ordinary activities.
