Guard the Mysteries! This exhibition pays homage to the development of book arts in the Bay Area over the past half century. In that time, vibrant and unexpected developments have taken the book in new directions. From Kenneth Patchen to Mark Head, the exhibition will highlight important works that, to paraphrase Lou Welch, "Reveal the Mysteries." Influential, exemplary and remarkable, these books chart the course of the still emerging genre of the artist's book. Included will be exemplars of literary printing from the Beat Era such as Dave Haselwood's collaborations with Michael McClure and Bruce Conner; the idiosyncratic and anarchic worhs of Zephyrus Image Press in the early '70s, and classics of the artist's book from 1975 to the present. A timeline in the gallery will invite viewers to add their own milestones as well as view the curators' selections in chronological order. Co-curated by Betsy Davids, Alastair Johnston and Kathleen Walkup. |
