Fateful Attractions: Fine Printing and Bookmkaing in Santa Cruz
Gregory Graalfs, curator
Mar 5 - Jun 4, 2004

Longtime home to iconoclastic and artistic spirits, Santa Cruz has also nurtured a vibrant community of fine-press printers and bookmakers for more than 30 years. This exhibition takes visitors back to the beginnings of letterpress printing on the Santa Cruz campus of the University of California, and then moves forward to showcase a wide variety of contemporary bookworks.

Curated by Gregory Graalfs, the show presents work from UC Santa Cruz's Cowell Press and the Lime Kiln Press, including Granite and Cypress, William Everson's tribute to Robinson Jeffers; Mind, Tongue, and Hand, a collection of broadsides; and Felicia Rice's collaborative work with students and faculty. Also featured are works by Tom Killion, Gary Young, Ruth McGurk, Peggy Gotthold and Lawrence Van Velzer of Foolscap Press, Peter and Donna Thomas, Samuel Amico, Kate Hitt and Paul Ritscher, among others.
