This exhibition marks the culmination of the Center's second yearlong course on the artist's book, an investigation of the artist's book as an object of inquiry and a realm of practice. Study of the nature, history and contemporary field of artist-book production has guided a series of creative responses to such questions as: What defines an artist's book? How have the terms and basis for this definition evolved in the last century? How does a book's visual form, physical structure and material elaboration continue the writing and enrich the reading of its text? Participating artists have produced substantial and complex works employing original texts, experimental materials and innovative forms. From a visual narrative of traffic cones to the iridescence of seashells, the subjects shaping these books have come to embody the sustained involvement of their makers: Kathy Barr, Nancy Coopersmith, Cathy de Heer, Heidi Hess, Holly Holmquist, Diane Dempsey Murray and Amy West. Their instructor has been Emily McVarish. |
