Featuring dozens of rubber stamp sets, both vintage and contemporary, from the collections of L. Scott Helmes and Picasso Gaglione, Multiplicity for Millions is a delightful look at what may be the most democratic form of printing ever invented. 'The history of rubber stamping,' writes Gaglione, 'is uniquely American. Vulcanization was invented in America in the 1860s and the first rubber stamps were produced soon afterward. The rebirth of stamping in the late 1970s began another era of creative energy that has led to amazing applications in the decorative arts.' Originally mounted at Minnesota Center for Book Arts in 2004, this lively and inspiring exhibition takes a look at the imaginative manifestations of a simple technology that makes printers and printmakers of us all. |
