What are we trying to trap here? by Andreas F. Schuller

Is reading an act of discovery –
or of creation?
Which comes first, word or idea?
You can read a face; can you read a cloud?

Book artists have been tussling with word and image, sequence and series, exploiting and examining the act of reading since the 1960s with Ed Ruscha, Carolee Schneeman, and the Fluxus artists.
Or since 1917 with El Lissitsky.
Or since 1824 with William Blake.

The Pacific Center for the Book Arts has curated an exhibition that we hope will raise more questions than it answers. Members were invited to submit sketches, models, conceptual books, and finished works of book arts both old and new that explore what reading is and how books and typography organize the experience of reading for readers.
