At The Tech Museum of Innovation, in downtown San Jose, March 1 September 7, 2000.
This playful and provocative exhibit explores surprising ways reading might evolve via new technologies. Developed by Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), it includes twelve interactive areas including a unique space for artists from the San Francisco Center for the Book. The Book Artists Studio is both a fully equipped workshop and a live action display where visitors can watch experts at work and even participate in making books. The eight book artists designing and creating books using both traditional handcrafts and cutting-edge digital tools in the studio are Michael Bartalos, Jocelyn Bergen, Kathleen Burch, Ann Chamberlain, Julie Chen, Charles Hobson, Brian Janusiak and Steve Woodall.
This exhibition, of course, has sparked many discussions about the book of the future. Look for more information, soon, about a short fall exhibition at the Center that will call on the entire book arts community to speculate and dream (perchance to prototype) about the future of the book and reading, how book arts can make a difference, to showcase the work coming out of the Book Artists Studio, and a look at some of todays cutting-edge reading tools like digitized rare books or the online Library of Alexandria.
Our gratitude to exhibit sponsors Xerox PARC, Adobe Systems, Universal Laser Systems, and to the Tech Museum and Apple Computer for collaborating on this artistic experiment. |
