This exhibit marks the culmination of a year-long class dedicated to sustained inquiry into the nature of the artist's book. What exactly is an artist's book and how has that definition evolved over the past 100 years? How does a book's visual form, material elaboration, and physical structure continue the writing and enrich the interpretation of its "text?" Responses to these questions have produced substantial and complex works using original texts, experimental materials and structural inventions. From the beauty of math, to the tricks of memory, the subjects shaping these books embody the intensity of their makers' involvement. The artists are Susan Angebranndt, Kate Godfrey, Rachel Higgins, Maureen Hilliard, Ann Marie Hovie, Linda Smith, Dina Tooley, Jennie Hinchcliff and Sharon Wynd. |
