The Bay Area has long been fertile soil for underground publishing of all kinds, so it seems particularly appropriate that The San Francisco Center for the Book should be the first American venue for this traveling show from England. Zines are the maverick inhabitants of publishing's Wild West, where the obsessional, the idiosyncratic and the willfully obscure roam free across pages unbounded by the constraints of mainstream agendas. This exhibition showcases an international collection of eye-popping zines, ranging from black-and-white photocopied editions to elaborate letterpress productions. Featured in a book (Zines) published last fall from London's Booth-Clibborn Editions, this collection has been assembled by Booth-Clibborn design editor Elizabeth Farrelly in collaboration with design team Mike Dorrian and David Recchia. |
