THE SAN FRANCISCO CENTER FOR THE BOOK PRESENTS
The Fifth Annual
ROADWORKS: Steamroller Prints

Potrero Hill's street fair took place Saturday, September 20, 2008, on De Haro Street between 16th and 17th streets.

Local artists and members of the community convened at this annual free street fair to create unique large-scale linoleum block carvings printed with a three-ton steamroller. The 2008 Roadworks: Steamroller Prints brought together six local artists. Click on the image to find out more about the artist. To see larger images of all the prints, click here.

MAKING A STEAMROLLER PRINT

2007 Roadwork's artist Brandon Mise inks up his 3x3 block of linoleum, I Smell Something Fruity

SFCB volunteers Jamye Jamison, Randi Hansen and Eric Sederholm carefully lay paper over William Wiley's linoleum block at last year's Roadworks

Next, heavy blankets are put on top of the block and the paper to act as a barrier between the prints and the steamroller

Steamroller driver extrordinaire Colleen Stockmann carefully backs up over the print.

We run over the prints several times to ensure even distribution.

Removing the blankets in anticpation of the big reveal.

The print gets carefully pulled off of the linoleum block

Jamye and Randi hold the print up for the crowd to see

Little Lino's give everyone in the community an opportunity to make a steamroller print! We print them 9-up throughout the day with one copy for the artist to keep and one to be sold to benefit SFCB! (photo by Sharon Wickham)

All day long you can visit our Little Lino's booth and catch prints coming right off of the street.

Every year we invite the best book artists, printers, designers and crafts people from our community to sell their designs at Roadworks.

One of our most popular tables all day are our free kids' activities! Kids of all ages can learn bookmaking and printmaking and take their beautiful creations home with them.
