Immerse yourself in exploring plant forms as an ever-inspiring creative resource, through historical and contemporary examples and techniques, from medieval herbals to William Morris to Anselm Kiefer. Through careful observation of live specimens create patterns and designs, color schemes, botanical sketches and wilder responsive imagery. This sequence of studies inÊpencil, charcoal, ink, watercolor and gouache will assemble into a portfolio, your document of inspiration and techniques. No drawing/painting experience required.

20 sheets hotpress watercolor paper cut or torn to 8x8 inches, Pad of sketch paper at least 8x8 inches, 2 sheets of decorative paper at least 20x30 inches, X-acto knife, Cutting mat, Gluing brush, Ruler, Bone folder, No.2 or HB pencil, Pencil sharpener with attachment or baggie to catch shavings, Kneaded eraser, Ruler, Fine or extra fine black felt tip pen (Pigma micron in size .01 is good), Black felt tip brush pen (Pitt, Pigma or Tombo make good ones), Prismacolor “cream” pencil and any other colored pencils and/or pastel pencils you may have), Charcoal pencils and sticks, Black drawing ink and dip pens, Pan or tube watercolors and mixing palette (see below for list of recommended colors), #8 and #4 round watercolor brushes. If you have them already, bring a small filbert, flat, old scruffy brush, rigger, liner, or any other brushes you like to use, Small container for paint water (such as a small yogurt container or jar), Rag or paper towels, Tube of white gouache (Winsor & Newton “Permanent White” is best), Recommended watercolors: permanent alizarin or quinacridone rose, cadmium red, ultramarine blue, cerulean or phthalo blue, lemon yellow or cadmium yellow pale, cadmium yellow medium or gamboge, sap green, oxide of chromium green, burnt sienna or quinacridone gold, permanent white gouache (not watercolor).
