Angelique & the Pearl Necklace: An Homage to Sail
Donald Glaister, Fools Gold Studio, Vashon Island, Washington
www.foolsgoldstudio.com

A painted book
Bound in quarter leather with painted cloth, veneer wood sides.
Interior pages constructed from wood, brass, cork, thread and other materials found in boat building.
2007; Edition of 50.

Glaister's thirty-year professional career in design bookbinding has centered on the exploration, development and use of unexpected binding materials, visual humor and spontaneous expression, while working within the classical framework of the European binding form.

Donald Glaister comments: "Angelique and the Pearl Necklace is a material homage to the elegant physicality of wooden sail boats, their making, and the spiritual nature of sailing. A two-part poem, printed letterpress and written by myself, introduces and explores these concepts. The thrust of the book, however, is visual: following both parts of the poem are abstract compositions on stiffened fabric pages, 24 in all, celebrating the elemental grace and strength of fine wooden sail boats."
