If you’ve been curious about book arts basics, this is a great starter class; in three hours, you’ll gain the know-how to start making books of your own.

About the Instructor | Bettina Pauly

Bettina is living in San Francisco as a book artist and working as a letterpress printer with Kim Vanderheiden at Painted Tongue Studios, Oakland, California. She teaches workshops at the San Francisco Center for the Book, the Academy of Art University and O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. She loves books and boxes both as physical objects and as containers of meaning. She is interested in a variety of folded, sewn and woven structures in which she can incorporate her printing.

Past Student Reviews:

“I loved how many structures we were able to cover in a beginners' workshop! Also, Bettina gave us a quick tour of some of the bindery equipment after the class and explained what each piece did, which was fascinating.”

“The class more than met my expectations. It was well-structured and I learned so much about books, book binding, etc. It was an interesting group of people. Bettina seems like she enjoys what she's doing and did a great job of teaching us.”

“Bettina is made to teach. She was easy to follow and made it interactive, fun and I don't think I've been this creative in a long time. To walk out of a class with several books I've made with my own hands was beyond my expectations. The other factor that was impressive, and I don't think all teachers could handle this, but it didn't matter the level of skill, everyone left with nice little books they've made and we all felt successful. I can't wait to take more classes.”

“Please see my comments on the previous page. If Bettina is a reflection of the level of instructors at SFCB, then there is an excellence that is apparent. When someone is passionate about what they do and especially that people learn what they came to learn, this is good stuff!”
