ROMAN CAPITALS. We are so used to them and they seem to have been always there, that we do not value them as they deserve: a peak of roman classical art as well as of human history. They have inspired artists from past to present, such as Renaissance scribes like Bartolomeo Sanvito to German Expressionist painters like Paul Klee.

This course is focused on Roman Majuscules, the origin of our everyday letters. We will begin by concentrating on the proportions, the relations of letter widths in the alphabet and the formal echoes between letters. When proportions are already set, we will be start writing the roman alphabet. First we will use the flat brush, learning how to press and rotate it to achieve different strokes and serifs. We will develop the alphabet from the three basic letters H-O-V becoming intimate with each letter stroke-by-stroke. We will finish by sketching either a short sentence or a small alphabet composition. The course will also include a short illustrated talk exploring historical examples and some modern interpretations of The Roman Letters.

Materials to Bring: Gouache, 2-3 colours, arabic gum, painter’s palette, some old cotton fabric (i.e. blankets, sheets, curtains, etc.).*

*Two flat brushes are included in the materials fee and will be given to students in the workshop.

About the Instructor | Oriol Miro i Genovart

Hi, my name is Oriol Miró i Genovart (omg). I am a Barcelona-based calligrapher. I work in calligraphy since 1994. My work includes collaborations and commissions for advertising agencies, graphic designers, museums, television, networks and publishing companies. I also love private commissions, unique calligraphy pieces meant to decorate any interior design.

I have been teaching calligraphy since 1995. My approach to calligraphy is always structural and never decorative. The main interest to me is to understand lettershapes and its relation to each other, that is the spaces between. I teach in the main Barcelona design universities, including Escola Elisava since 1995 and Escola Idep since 2006. Since 2015 I am head coordinator and teacher in the Calligraphy Department at Escola Visions in Barcelona, offering three calligraphy levels: Beginner’s Course, General Course of Calligraphy and Advanced Course of Calligraphy.

Since 2008, and twice a year, I run my own intensive calligraphy courses in Girona.

As a graphic design student, one of our subjects was Calligraphy. I fell in love with it and decided to be a calligrapher for the rest of my life. My obsessions are letters, countershapes, papers, brushes and all kind of pens. Time flies away on a good day, these days when I can stay at the studio working for hours and hours. My passion is calligraphy, I cannot conceive a single day without writing letters.
