This is a two-session online workshop: Saturday and Sunday, March 6 & 7, 2021.

Using a contemporary version of gilding, the process of applying paper-thin sheets of metal to a surface, workshop participants will learn how to add metal to paper, wood and stone in their own shapes and patterns. Over the course of two 2-hour sessions, Solange will walk participants through the nuances of this technique from how to effectively prepare a variety of material surfaces and apply metal leaf as a compositional element. 

Registration will close on February 26 to allow time for materials to be ordered/delivered.


Materials to Bring: 

The following four items are contained in a kit available from our friends at Arch Supplies, or independently from most art supply stores. Please purchase ASAP to ensure materials will arrive before class.
-1 ounce bottle red oxide fluid acrylic paint
-1 bottle of gilding size 
-1 bottle of gilding sealant
-1 packet of copper or composition gold leaf 

Also:
-a small hake or other soft brush
-a pair of soft cotton gloves or a piece of soft cotton fabric
-at least 3 different surfaces including a piece of Bristol paper (required). A rock and a piece of wood are recommended; fabric and other surfaces encouraged for experimentation
-3 8x10” sheets of wax paper
-several small calligraphy, acrylic or watercolor brushes of varying sizes
-a pencil
-a hair dryer
-a straight edge ruler
-2 cups, 1 for water and 1 for fluid acrylic
-a rag or paper towel

Solange Roberdeau is a teaching artist based in Northern California. She uses contemporary gilding in her own studio practice and has taught this technique locally in the Bay Area and beyond at venues including SFCB, San Francisco CA; Kala Art Institute, Berkeley CA; Workshop SF, San Francisco CA; the Maryland Institute College of Art Baltimore MD; Form and Concept Gallery, Santa Fe NM; the Cairo American College, Cairo Egypt.
