Emily McVarish

Emily McVarish is Professor of Graphic Design at California College of the Arts, where she teaches typography, writing, and letterpress design. A writer, designer, and book artist, she has maintained a hybrid practice in San Francisco since 1990. Her work has been exhibited internationally, published by Granary Books, and collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Thomas J. Watson Library and the British Library among other institutions.

         

In collaboration with Johanna Drucker, she co-authored Graphic Design History: A Critical Guide published by Prentice Hall. Her critical writing has been featured in the Journal of Artists’ Books, Visible Language, Design and Culture, Tijdschrift voor Mediageschiedenis, Journal of Design History, and Afterimage. Her monograph of Emigre (magazine and foundry) will be published by Letterform Archive in 2025.
