Small Plates
Each year SFCB invites artists to produce an artist book edition of a specific size (4 inches x 4 inches) in a limited edition of 50-100. SFCB provides space, equipment, technical support, and a materials budget to Small Plates artists to help produce their edition of books.
Since the program's beginning in 2008 artists have produced over 50 editions, all of which represent the hard work and creative vision of each artist. Small Plates editions are sold in our Biblioshop.
Small Plates 2026: Request for Proposals
SFCB is currently seeking proposals for the 2026 Small Plates program. This program provides space, equipment, technical support, and a stipend amount to Bay Area artists for a limited edition 4” x 4” artists’ book to be created at the SFCB studio facility. For the 2026 cycle, we will be inviting artists to create their own edition to be presented at a joint publication release in June of 2026.
The proposal (which we prefer in PDF format) should include the following:
A short, one paragraph description of the book you would like to make.
A specifications list of the binding and printing required for the project.
Two or three simple sketches of a page spread or general concept.
A 50-word bio that serves as an introduction.
Links to your social media presence.
SFCB will provide selected artists with access to our studios and equipment, as well as a $1500 stipend for creating a book in an edition of 100 copies. The books produced in the program are shared between the artist and SFCB; the artist’s share is 20 of the 100 books produced. The finished edition of books will be delivered to SFCB no later than May 31, 2026 and selected artists will agree to attend the Publication Party on June 19, 2026. A Small Plates panel will review these proposals and announce selections before the end of December, 2025.
Proposals should be emailed to smallplates@sfcb.org. You may also contact Chad Johnson, Studio Director, at 415-565-0545 with any questions regarding the process.
