PROPER TRAINING IS REQUIRED TO USE ANY EQUIPMENT at the San Francisco Center for the Book.

LETTERPRESS PRINTING EQUIPMENT & TYPE

Letterpress equipment is pressure-based, meaning that certain parts of every press create great amounts of crushing power. In addition, presses have gears, rollers, and moving parts, which can wind around loose clothes, scarves, or long hair. When in doubt, STOP THE PRESS and turn OFF the motor or brake the flywheel. Never reach into a moving press and if you have a question find an Instructor or Studio Manager. Ingesting lead particles may be harmful, so be sure to wash your hands before eating or drinking. Always wear gloves when cleaning the press. Some of our inks and solvents may cause irritation or allergic reactions. If you begin to feel dizzy, nauseous, or light-headed, stop printing immediately and step out for some fresh air. Always feel free to turn on the air filter and use the ventilation masks provided. Do not attempt to use ANY equipment until you have been instructed on its proper use.

PAPER CUTTING EQUIPMENT

Each piece of cutting equipment has its own safety procedures and proper use. Users must fully understand and have been trained on each type of cutting device before using. In addition to sharp blades, many cutters use clamps that can crush or break fingers. If you  have ANY questions, please find an Instructor or the Studio Manager before proceeding.

BOOKBINDING EQUIPMENT

Bindery tools all have a specific use as well as potential for harm, whether it is heat, pressure, sharpness, or something else. ALL bindery equipment requires training and proper care to protect both user and tool. Always ask first if you have questions.
