Ziggurat Book with Trace Monotype with Stephanie Jucker

  • San Francisco Center for the Book 375 Rhode Island Street San Francisco, CA, 94103 United States (map)

Is it a book, is it a sculpture, is it a toy? When using the Ziggurat Fold you can create something that is all three, and more.

It has an intriguing mathematical quality that can be adapted to many different forms. In this class we’ll play with its architectural possibilities and create a castle-like structure that spirals out from flat to 3D.

Using paper and some simple folds, cut outs, and pop-up techniques students will design a ziggurat-style building.  Surface design will be added using trace monotype techniques, allowing the addition of texture, detail and text. The final piece can be displayed in a variety of ways, nearly closed or partially unfurled and a light can be added inside to create a magical decorative sculpture.

Materials to Bring

All tools and materials will be provided. Students are also welcome to bring any of their own favorite bookbinding tools or art supplies.

"Stephanie was delightful, encouraging and very calm."

"Stephanie gave us very detailed instructions on how to construct, then offered several examples of how to customize and think outside of the box. Very engaging and really sparked my creative juices! If fact, one week later (today) I just completed a new book :)"
